What is Klaviyo Shopify setup?
Short answer: It is connecting Klaviyo to your Shopify store, confirming that customers, orders and store activity sync correctly, and building the automated flows that send the right email at the right moment. A flow is a sequence of automated messages triggered by a behavior or event.
Klaviyo is an email and messaging platform that reads your Shopify data, so it can send messages based on what a shopper actually did: joined your list, abandoned a cart, bought a product or went quiet. Klaviyo defines a flow as a sequence of automated actions, such as sending messages, triggered by a behavior or event. People searching for "Shopify email marketing services" usually want this: automated emails that bring customers back without manual sends.
Setup is the foundation. A flow built on incomplete or duplicated data sends the wrong emails to the wrong people, so we check the connection first. For one-off promotions, see our guide to email marketing for ecommerce. To see how Klaviyo compares with other tools, read Klaviyo vs Mailchimp and Klaviyo vs WebEngage.
Which six Klaviyo flows do we build?
Short answer: Welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, replenishment and win-back. Klaviyo's own advice is to set the welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase and winback flows live first, because they are the most impactful.
| Flow | Starts when | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome series | Someone joins your list. | Introduces your brand and works toward a first purchase. Klaviyo says it converts new subscribers into first-time customers. |
| Abandoned cart | A shopper starts checkout and does not order. | Reminds them of the items left behind. Klaviyo says it can be tailored to the items in the cart and whether the shopper is already a customer. |
| Browse abandonment | A shopper views products but does not add to cart. | Shows the products they looked at, with reasons to come back. Needs onsite tracking to be working. |
| Post-purchase | An order is placed. | Confirms what to expect, explains product use, asks for a review and suggests related products. |
| Replenishment reminder | A set time after purchase, based on how long the product lasts. | Prompts a reorder for consumable products such as supplements and skincare. Timing is set from your product cycle. |
| Win-back | A past customer has not bought for a period you define. | Re-engages lapsed customers. Klaviyo says it can be tailored to what they bought and how many times. |
Flow descriptions and the recommended order are from Klaviyo's guide to flows, checked 20 October 2026. Klaviyo also offers a Flow Library of templates, which we use as a starting point and then adapt to your products and offers.

How does the Klaviyo and Shopify data sync work?
Short answer: Klaviyo first syncs your last 90 days of Shopify data, then runs a full historical sync that takes minutes to several days depending on store size. After that, Shopify metrics and profile properties sync in real time.
| Event | When Klaviyo records it | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Placed Order | When checkout is complete and an order is created. | Use this to trigger and filter flows and segments. |
| Ordered Product | When an order is placed, once for each item bought. | It syncs seconds after Placed Order, so Klaviyo advises using Placed Order consistently in triggers and filters. |
| Fulfilled Order | When an order is marked fulfilled. | Useful for shipping-related messages. |
| Cancelled Order | When an order is cancelled before fulfillment. | Used to stop flows that should not continue. |
| Refunded Order | Only for fully refunded orders. | Partial refunds are not sent, so we plan filters around that. |
Details from Klaviyo's guide to Shopify data, checked 20 October 2026. Klaviyo does not re-sync events afterward, so changes made later, such as tags added to an order, will not appear in Klaviyo.
Turn off Shopify's own abandoned checkout email. If Klaviyo sends your abandoned cart flow, Klaviyo says you must disable Shopify's version manually: in Shopify, go to Settings, then Checkout, find Abandoned checkouts under Email Marketing, and untick the option to automatically send abandoned checkout emails. Otherwise shoppers can get two reminders. This is one of the first things we check. Source: Klaviyo's help article.
What do we set up in a Klaviyo project?
Short answer: The Shopify connection and data check, list migration and segmentation, six core flows, branded email templates, and testing of every flow before it goes live.
| Area | What we do | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Connection and data check | Connect Klaviyo to Shopify, confirm the initial and historical sync, check events and fix gaps. | A store that sends clean data to Klaviyo. |
| List migration and segmentation | Import existing subscribers with valid consent and build segments such as new, repeat and lapsed customers. | Segments your flows and campaigns can use. |
| Six core flows | Build welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, replenishment and win-back flows. | Flows tested with real test profiles before launch. |
| Branded templates | Design email templates in your brand colors, fonts and tone. | Reusable templates for flows and campaigns. |
| Sender setup check | Check your sending-domain authentication and unsubscribe setup against sender requirements. | A list of what to fix before you scale sends. |
Klaviyo setup is an optional add-on to a store build, quoted separately, or a standalone project. For flows beyond email, see our Shopify marketing automation service. For a deeper walkthrough of the connection, read our guide to Shopify and Klaviyo integration.
How does our Klaviyo setup process work?
Short answer: We audit your current email setup, connect and verify the data, prepare your list, build and test the flows, launch them, and review how they perform.
Audit
We review your store, current email tool, list, offers and brand, and agree which flows to build.
Connect and verify
We connect Klaviyo to Shopify, check the sync and events, and turn off duplicate Shopify emails where needed.
Prepare the list
We migrate subscribers with valid consent and build the segments your flows need.
Build and test
We build the six flows and templates, then test each one with test profiles to confirm triggers, timing, filters and links.
Launch
We switch the flows live and watch the first sends for errors.
Review and improve
We review flow performance with you against your own baseline and agree what to change next.
What sender rules affect whether emails are delivered?
Short answer: Google requires every sender to authenticate with SPF or DKIM and keep its spam rate below 0.3%. Bulk senders of more than 5,000 messages a day also need DMARC and one-click unsubscribe. No one can guarantee inbox placement, but following these rules helps.
- All senders: set up SPF or DKIM for your sending domain, use TLS, and keep the spam rate in Google Postmaster Tools below 0.3%
- Bulk senders (more than 5,000 messages a day): SPF and DKIM, plus DMARC, and marketing messages must support one-click unsubscribe with a visible unsubscribe link
- Spam rate: Google's monitoring guidance suggests aiming below 0.10%, and avoiding 0.30% or higher
- Consent: only email people who opted in. We import lists only with valid consent records
Requirements from Google's email sender guidelines, in force from 1 February 2024 and checked 20 October 2026.
How do we judge whether email is working?
Short answer: By flow revenue, orders and revenue per recipient against your own baseline, not by open rates alone. We do not promise numbers, because they depend on your list, products and offers.
- Flow revenue and orders: what each flow actually produces, shown by flow so weak ones can be fixed
- Revenue per recipient: revenue divided by recipients, which accounts for list size
- Clicks and conversion: a better guide than opens, which are an unreliable signal
- List health: unsubscribe and spam complaint rates, because they protect deliverability
Want to pair email with a store that converts better? See our CRO service. To collect better first-party data, read about zero-party data quizzes.
How long does it take and what does it cost?
Short answer: You get a fixed price in writing within 2 working days of a free discovery call. Klaviyo bills its own subscription separately, and its pricing page lists a free plan for up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month.
What moves the price and the timeline:
- List size and condition: a clean list of consented contacts is quick to migrate, while a messy one needs cleanup first
- Number of flows and emails: six core flows are the baseline, and extra flows or longer sequences add scope
- Template design: a simple branded template or several custom ones
- Product cycle: replenishment timing needs your product-use data
- Integrations: subscription, review or loyalty apps that feed Klaviyo need to be connected and tested
Klaviyo setup is quoted separately from a store build. See how we quote on our pricing page. Klaviyo sets and changes its own prices, so check Klaviyo's pricing page for current plans.

Frequently asked questions
What is Klaviyo Shopify setup?
Klaviyo Shopify setup connects your Shopify store to Klaviyo, verifies that customer and order data syncs correctly, and builds the automated email flows that run on that data. Cognito IT Consultancy builds six core flows for D2C brands, tested before they go live.
What is a Klaviyo flow?
Klaviyo defines a flow as a sequence of automated actions, such as sending messages, triggered by a behavior or event. A flow can start when someone places an order, joins a segment or abandons a cart, and it keeps running without manual sends.
Which Klaviyo flows should I set up first?
Klaviyo's own guidance says to set the most impactful flows live first: a welcome series, an abandoned cart flow, a post-purchase flow and a winback flow, in that order. We build those four plus a browse abandonment flow and a replenishment reminder.
How does Klaviyo connect to Shopify?
Klaviyo first syncs your last 90 days of Shopify data, then runs a full historical sync that can take from a few minutes to several days depending on store size. After that, metrics and profile properties sync in real time.
Do I need to turn off Shopify's abandoned checkout emails?
Yes, if Klaviyo sends your abandoned cart flow. Klaviyo says you must do this manually: in Shopify go to Settings, then Checkout, find Abandoned checkouts under Email Marketing, and untick the option to automatically send abandoned checkout emails. Otherwise shoppers can receive two reminders.
Which event should trigger flows after a purchase?
Use Placed Order. Klaviyo advises using it for flow triggers and filters, because Placed Order and Ordered Product sync seconds apart and Ordered Product fires once per item bought, so Klaviyo asks you to stay consistent about which one you use.
How much does Klaviyo cost?
Klaviyo sets its own prices and changes them, so check its pricing page. Its pricing page lists a free plan for up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month. Klaviyo bills you directly, and our setup fee is separate.
How much do your Klaviyo setup services cost?
We quote a fixed price in writing within 2 working days of a free discovery call. Klaviyo setup is an add-on to a store build or a standalone project, and the proposal lists every flow and deliverable. The price depends on list size, number of flows and data cleanup.
How long does Klaviyo setup take?
It depends on your list size, how many flows you want and how clean your data is. Your written proposal gives a dated plan. We test every flow with real test profiles before it goes live, so launch dates include testing time.
What do you need from me to start?
Access to your Shopify admin and a Klaviyo account, an export of your existing subscriber list with consent records, your brand assets and your offer rules, such as discounts and free shipping thresholds. We send a checklist after the discovery call.
Can you migrate my list from Mailchimp or another tool?
Yes. List migration and segmentation are part of our Klaviyo setup. We import only contacts with valid consent, and we map your existing segments to Klaviyo. See our comparisons of Klaviyo with Mailchimp and WebEngage if you are still choosing a tool.
Will my emails reach the inbox?
No one can guarantee inbox placement. What helps is following sender rules. Google requires SPF or DKIM from all senders and a spam rate below 0.3%, and bulk senders of more than 5,000 messages a day also need DMARC and one-click unsubscribe. We check your authentication setup.
What results can I expect from Klaviyo flows?
We do not promise numbers, because results depend on your list, products, offers and traffic. We measure flow revenue, conversion and revenue per recipient against your own baseline, and we use clicks and orders rather than open rates to judge a flow.
Do you set up WhatsApp or SMS flows?
Klaviyo setup here covers email. WhatsApp and wider automation are covered by our marketing automation service, which is scoped separately. Messaging channels have their own consent rules, so we plan them with you before building.
